Please note: As of 1 July 2025, the New Zealand Institute for Public Health and Forensic Science (PHF Science) is the new name for the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR). Articles and information published before this date may reference the organisation's former name.

The expertise of ESR's forensic scientists and technicians can be applied to numerous fields.

ESR has delivered forensic awareness training to the London-based Conflict Armament Research group who document weapons at the point of use and track their sources through the chains of supply.

Conflict Armament Research (CAR) investigators are dispatched to conflict zones such as Iraq and Somalia to document weapons and track their movement throughout the world.

ESR conducted forensic awareness training with the group to bring more of a ‘forensic’ approach and methodology to their investigations. We also introduced systems such as 3D modelling and visualisations to capture scene information.
