Wastewater Surveillance Report - Monthly Report May 2024

Summary

In May 2024, 362 samples were collected across Aotearoa. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 358/362 (98%) of samples from 45/45 sites (100%). From late April, increasing SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels in wastewater nationally were observed that continued to increase over the month. In May 2024, levels were at the highest since December 2022. In May, JN.1 and descendent linages dominated, with the percentage of KP.3 reaching 38% by week 20 (week ending 19 May 2024). Nationally, the JN.1 percentage was 48% by week 20.
