Summary

This report summarises the results of the genomic surveillance of Shigella species isolated from shigellosis cases in New Zealand, principally from 2022 and 2023. Routine genomic analysis has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the epidemiology of Shigella in New Zealand. Notably, there are increasing detections of extensively drug resistant (XDR) strains and evidence of local transmission of XDR Shigella within New Zealand.
