Environmental health report: Guidance on the appropriate usage and interpretation of data from environmental (eDNA) analysis

Summary

This report provides technical guidance for Te Whatu Ora and the Ministry of Health on the appropriate use and interpretation of environmental DNA (eDNA) and environmental RNA (eRNA) results for public health and biosecurity surveillance in Aotearoa New Zealand. While eDNA/eRNA methods are widely used for biodiversity monitoring, their application to health protection differs because decisions (e.g., public alerts, vector control, follow up sampling) must be timely, defensible, and proportionate to risk.
