2023 - Vibrio isolates

Summary

The Enteric Reference Laboratory (ERL) typed a total of 44 Vibrio parahaemolyticus and cholerae isolates in 2023. There were 26 V. parahaemolyticus isolates referred from 22 acute gastroenteritis cases Four isolates were referred from cases that did not meet the case definition for acute gastroenteritis, including: one leg wound infected during diving, two cases without gastro symptoms, and one co-infection without any symptoms of gastroenteritis).Additionally, there was one confirmed toxigenic V. cholerae (sequence type 69) out of 18 V. cholerae isolates submitted to ERL. The case with toxigenic V. cholerae had travelled to the United Arab Emirates and the isolate was the same sequence type (ST69) as a case from 2022 that had a history of travel to Pakistan. There was a 61.1% increase in overall V. cholerae submissions in 2023 of 18 compared to 11 isolates in 2022.
